What Did You Wake Up To?

Photobucket
I woke up to a marshmallow world! Yesterday we got another foot or so of snow which means we have just over three feet of snow in some places. It is so pretty to look at this morning and the sky is so blue. I hope my Darling Man finishes plowing the driveway soon so I can go take some pictures .. on my way to do some shopping.

We had another power outage last night that lasted about 16 hours. Some of you wonder how we manage to stay warm and safe during those times since it is so cold here now. It was minus 24C the other morning when we got up.

We are very well equipped to deal with the power outages. To stay warm, we rely on our trusty woodstove which we tend to use more than the furnace for heat anyway. It can heat the house up very nicely - sometimes it is even too effective and I have to open the door and window to cool us off! The stove also has a little ledge on it which is wide enough that I can put a pot and a kettle on there to heat whatever is in them. I make sure we have lots of food that doesn't need elaborate preparation. In addition, we have a camp stove which runs on naptha fuel (a liquid gas) and a propane BBQ.

Oil lamps and a Coleman lantern provide light along with flashlights and candles. I have been teasing my husband that we haven't had so many romantic meals since we were first married!

We also have a small generator which we use to keep our water lines open and the water running in the house. We have bottled water on hand as well. Sometimes we even hook the TV to the generator so we can watch the news.

Despite being in a rural area, we are not remote. We have neighbours on either side a few minutes walk each way. We can get into town and usually the power is on there so we treat ourselves sometimes to a meal out.

So you can see, we are safe, warm and not hungry. In return for a little inconvenience we have a breathtaking vista every morning, clean air and only the chirping birds disturbing the peace and quiet here ... except when the generator is running! lol

It sounds like a totally idyllic life you are living. Love the black and white effect of the snow piled on the branches.

What an interesting life in such a lovely place ... it's a pleasure learning more about you and seeing your photos! I love the Sepia one too and appreciate your specific input about what you did to it.
Hugs and blessings,

Marshmallow World - I LOVE that song by Dean Martin! I'm a sucker for him!!! And, Yes, You're right - it does look like a marshmallow world & I don't know if I'm seeing things or not, but it looks like you're softened the scene - it doesn't look as crisp & clean lined... am I right? hehehe
It definitely sounds like you guys have it under control during outages! I would have to go stay w/ my parents if that happened here... of course, it doesn't usually get THAT COLD here though!
